The course of 2017 Moves In! Bike racks are all occupied. Lines are a bit that is little again to get food. Books are being purchased. Tools are put away and summer time construction has dwindled down (well, nearly all of it). Automobiles filled up with boxes of clothing and school materials are being directed around campus to residential halls. Going carts, student ID cards, and last second trips to Target; folks, it’s officially Move-In Day.
I was overwhelmed by the energy of the campus as I was walking the campus to take some pictures. Sometimes we forget that I work at a university campus filled with dreamers, innovators, and future international leaders. We found myself just using it all in while smiling at pupils and parents I have never met before. ( It could have now been just a little weird, but hey, I was caught in a moment). Suddenly, I wished to travel back in its history, get back in to college and experience this all over again!
Yesterday morning, I saw the look of excitement and awe on the faces of first-year students as these people were entering their dorms for the very first time. Subsequently, I sensed a great amount of pride and a bit of hesitation from parents because they struggled to allow their kids go. It is apparent that this moment is really a milestone in most of these lives. Students look ahead to their next four years at USC and wonder at most of the possibilities it could bring, while parents feel a feeling of achievement simply because they were somewhat responsible for getting their kids to college. With all of these feelings swirling on campus, I am able to realise why there were therefore hugs that are many around.
through the welcome convocation today, speakers stood in front side of the incoming course of 2017 and provided advice on how to maximize of their time here at USC. I want to reiterate what Professor Harkness, from the Dornsife College, said during her message: show up. It is not as easy in your own life as it sounds but you will be a better human being the sooner you can practice it. To the brand new incoming freshmen at USC and present students; I challenge you to be present. Show up in your classes. Show up in your conversations. Be present as you do your homework. Be present once you’re meeting people that are new. Be current whenever you write your personal statements. Be present when you study for the AP/IB tests. Be present when the tests are taken by you. Be there when you ask her/him away. Be present in conflict. Be present in brand new challenges. Be contained in all of your new experiences and adventures. Take it all in. Be present!

Hey Parents! Listen Up!

Parents play a crucial role in the college process that is entire. Usually times, moms and dads help subsidize some, if not all, of going to an university, and are always here to inquire of those specific ‘parent’ questions you need to ask the tour guide when the last meningitis outbreak was? that you as students can’t be bothered with (really mom, did)

However, there are instances where parents must have a back seat and allow their sons and daughters to inquire of the difficult questions. Right Here, we’ve a compiled an inventory of ‘dos and donts’ about parenting during the college search and application process:

Do assist your son or daughter understand what they are looking for in a college, reminding them to consider location, size, academic programs, cost/financial help, etc. Finding a good fit for your specific wants and needs is more important than the cachet of the name.

do not gather every one of the information for them! Allow them to get hold of admission counselors and discover the appropriate information for themselves. After all, they are going to somewhere be in college quickly enough, and it’s also important they learn to navigate the procedure themselves.

Do encourage your sons and daughters to consult with https://shmoop.pro/ college campuses, and have them on those tours! The way that is best to get acquainted with a college or university is to make the trip to campus.

Don’t check your sons and daughters in for campus tours, interviews, receptions, etc. Allow them do it! This shows us they are independent and mature.

Do remind your sons and daughters that not receiving directly into their very first option school might seem just like the end associated with globe at that moment, but that things work out and that they can be successful wherever they go as long as they strive. And, encourage them to transfer if that organization remains towards the top of the list even after enrolling someplace else.

Don’t fill their applications out for them! We can tell plus it reflects poorly on the applicant. We realize that these are teenagers applying and expect their applications to share their voice that is true and.

So the moral is: find a balance. Realize that your child is about to attempt a life-changing journey and that starting to simply take ownership of the college application process is a good jumping off point. But, also rest assured if they involve where to send the care package that we are here to answer those tough ‘parent’ questions, even.
